In 2016, the CDC reported that at least 1 in 66 children in Arkansas had been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To put that into perspective, that would be 1.5% of the children in our state that are living with a neurodevelopmental disorder that is “characterized by impairments in social interaction, deficits in verbal and non-verbal communication, and repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behavior,” as the Arkansas Autism Resource and Outreach Center (AAROC) puts it. This percentage has risen in the last few years as awareness begins to spread and more children are able to be diagnosed.

Individuals with ASD often need unique services and support throughout their lives. Luckily, the AAROC has made it their mission to “provide Hope, Direction & Support to families of individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder”. This devoted organization fulfills its mission by implementing programs centered on parental support, education and training, and awareness and advocacy. Without these fundamental tools, the individuals and families in our community that are diagnosed with ASD might feel abandoned or excluded.
